Valle della Caccia Oasis

Near Senerchia, on the south-eastern side of the Picentini mountains, the Valle della Caccia Oasis offers streams, woodland and a waterfall of about 30 metres. Beech, turkey oak, maple and black pine grow in the area. A trail follows the clear Acquabianca stream through a rocky landscape towards the falls.

A long walk from Contursi Terme following the Sele towards the upper valley is possible only for well-prepared walkers and may be demanding, especially in its final section. For a simpler visit, drive along the Fondovalle Sele road to the Quaglietta exit and follow the signs towards Senerchia and the oasis. Check current access, route conditions and opening arrangements with the managing organisation.

Beyond the waterfall: Senerchia

The old village was abandoned after the 1980 earthquake. Above it stand remains of a Lombard castle, including walls and a round tower. Among the ruins, vegetation now grows through the former streets. The rebuilt Mother Church preserves objects recovered from the old church, including a damaged crucifix and a wooden beam.

The restored Romanesque Church of San Michele Arcangelo dates to the twelfth century and houses a wooden statue of the saint. The area also has caves associated with local devotion, including Grotta Profunnata, Grotta del Diavolo and the cave of the Madonna di Senerchia.

Wildlife and local history

Wolf, fox, pine marten, wildcat and badger are among the mammals recorded in the wider area. Birds include owl, buzzard, black woodpecker and peregrine falcon. In the newer settlement, the Wolf Museum explores one of the area's emblematic animals. Sightings in the wild are never guaranteed.
